Aprilia-BRNO, RACE 1: BIAGGI AND THE RSV4 ATOP THE HIGHEST STEP OF THE PODIUM

The very first victory in 2009 to combine the names of Max Biaggi and Aprilia has arrived from the historic and prestigious Brno circuit, home to the Czech round of the Superbike world Championships. The Roman driver secured his ninth victory on this track which saw him triumphant during a period from 1994 to 1996 with the RSW 250cc and which then led to three world championship titles. Max Biaggi, started off well, right behind a phenomenal Corser who took off like a rocket from the second row. The course of the race changed during the third lap, with Spies taking the lead followed by the Roman on his RSV4 and Fabrizio’s Ducati. The three stepped up the pace, leaving their competitors behind. But an episode that would change the entire race took place during the fifth lap. Fabrizio, in second position, attempted to pass Spies on the inside, but about halfway through the turn he lost control of his front wheel, taking the blameless American down with him. At that point, Biaggi had the track ahead all to himself and began to push the pace, given that Checa was less than a second behind him. Max managed to gain a few tenths of a second per lap over the Spaniard and his Honda. Just five laps from the finish, with a two-second difference by then, Biaggi lost Checa who crossed the finish line with a time difference of 3:631, ahead of his teammate Rea, who came in third, 9:948 behind Biaggi. Today Max Biaggi secured his fourth SBK victory, bringing Aprilia back to the top of the podium for the ninth time in the world championships for production derived bikes, a category from which the company had been absent since 2001 when Regis Laconi won Race 2 at Imola with the then two-cylinder RSV1000. It was an unlucky Race 1 for Shinya Nakano who, starting off from fifteenth position, managed to reach ninth place but was then forced to withdraw due to an electrical problem.

"It’s fantastic,” said Biaggi. “I still can’t believe it, I’m feeling some indescribable emotions. The last few laps were a series of flashbacks of my previous eight wins here at Brno. It was a very, very difficult race. Once I was in the lead, I pushed really hard but I couldn’t break away from Checa and Rea who were really quite competitive. I’m sorry about the accident that Fabrizio caused, but that’s the type of thing that can happen in a race. I want to thank my entire team and Aprilia for this victory, especially Gigi Dall’Igna who is a bit like the father of the RSV4 and who unfortunately couldn’t be here in Brno this time. I’m very proud to have been the first to win with this new generation motorcycle, just like in ’94 with the 250cc when we won the first championship title together.”

EIGHT HOURS, THREE PODIUMS & ONE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

Touring Sport Ducshop Ducati won their third consecutive Moto-GT2 Championship at the season finale AMA Pro SunTrust 8-hour endurance race at Daytona International Speedway yesterday on the # 77 Ducati PS1000LE.
The team’s other PS1000LE (#38) finished third in the class, while its Ducati 848 scored third in the Moto-GT1 class.
The team is particularly proud of the fact that it was the only Moto-GT1 privateer effort to reach the podium. Running against two of the strongest factory-backed endurance teams in the nation, Westby Racing and RoadracingWorld Suzuki, the Ducshop team boasted flawless pitstops and was as high as second place for part of the race.
Typically, the 8-hour race didn’t go to plan. The Ducshop team is considering petitioning to have the event changed to a seven-hour race because every year they suffer a calamity in the final hour.
This year’s happened on the famed Daytona embankment. Team strategy dictated the # 38 bike was to win the race while the # 77 machine was to be consistent and smooth enough to claim the championship, but after leading the class for seven hours #38 quit on the straight. Rider Brian Stokes, who had just taken the seat for the final stint, pushed the dead bike back to the pits. After 15 minutes of diagnosis, crew chief Mark Sutton replaced a faulty ECU with a Microtec ECU and sent them back onto the track, albeit in third position. Like last year, he’d saved the day, only this time without burning his fingers*.
Meanwhile the championship-leading #77 bike had taken over the lead, where it stayed until the checkered flag.
All nine riders did something to cause their team a 20-second penalty. Team owner Frank Shockley’s transgression brought out the entire team to help the marshal count down the 20-second drive-through penalty, and after his stint the crew forced him to do 20 pushups in his riding gear. Shockley was also awarded the meatball flag when the headlight died during his stint. The problem was quickly remedied with a flashlight and an entire roll of duct tape.
The team would like to thank the crew and riders (listed) who supported them though the eight hours along with the sponsors whose support helped them through the season. They would like to extend a special thank you to Ducati, who supplied their factory rider, Dario Marchetti, for the race.
*In 2007 Sutton also saved the race and championship in the last lap when he successfully changed the clutch on an unscheduled pitstop, earning him the name Hot Fingers. He’s now aptly named Miracle Mark.
Ducshop proudly builds and maintains the PS1000LE engine. The team is also sponsored by Touring Sport Ducati, gBehavior, EZ- Glide 350, Öhlins USA, Speedy Moto, Robby Byrd, USDESMO, Swatt Motorcycle, JVE Limited and Pilot Leathers and Operation Home Front.

HYPERMOTARD 796. THE NEW WAY TO 'GO HYPER.'

Ahead of the EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan, Ducati release images previewing its newest model – the fun and versatile Hypermotard 796.

Just as aggressively striking as the 1100, the lightweight new Hypermotard 796 features a lower seat height and brand new smooth and flexible engine to make it the perfect urban assault vehicle.

A dry weight of just 167kg (368lb) and seat height of 825mm (32.5in) makes the Hypermotard 796 a sure-footed 20mm (0.8in) lower than the 1100 and inspires confidence however and wherever it’s ridden.

The completely new Ducati 796 engine has a bore and stroke of 88mm x 66mm, conforms to Euro 3 regulations and produces 81hp (59.6kW) of power and 55.7lb-ft (7.7kgm) of torque with the smooth and very economical rideability enjoyed from all Desmodue L-Twins.

The new power unit is also equipped with an APTC ‘wet’ clutch to give a ‘slipper’ type action that prevents destabilization of the rear-end during aggressive down-shifting and also gives the extra benefit of a super-light feel at the adjustable lever, a great advantage in stop-start city traffic or during longer journeys.

The new Hypermotard 796 comes in an urban-style Dark finish with matte black tank and beak section, black frame and black wheels or, alternatively, matte white tank with contrasting matte black beak, black frame and black wheels. For the purists, an 1100 look-alike with Ducati red tank with matching beak section, red frame and black wheels gives the 796 a traditional livery.

Whether it's working the daily commute or attacking the open roads, the 796 will ride the common ground between

manners and madness by mixing Ducati’s unrivalled twin-cylinder power and sportbike heredity with the lightweight and minimalist supermotard concept.

2010 MSRP $9,995 ($11,495 CDN)
